A Do-Gooder World

I remember a time when I was into M.A.C.  I was fortunate enough to have earned a position as a makeup artist for M.A.C. and although I had a lot of fun, I quickly realized that it was a line that was in a world of its own.  Once I was in M.A.C., that became "the world" and it was hard to even explore other options and interact with others outside this world.  Part of the reason was that it was an active world that to this day, churns out multiple collections of limited edition items faster than many can keep up.  Looking at it from an outside perspective now that I am older, the people who surround the counter daily seem younger than I remember.  As a whole, it is a different type of clientele  - not worse or better, just different.

Yes, M.A.C. is a different world.  That's why I thought it was a perfect partnership when they signed on Lady Gaga, a different kind of entertainer, who first appeared in a Viva Glam campaign last year with another unique icon, Cyndi Lauper.  This year, on the heels of her Grammy Red Carpet entrance in a pod, M.A.C. has unveiled Lady Gaga as an other-worldly, ethereal presence for the M.A.C. Viva Glam Gaga 2 campaign.

For her star power alone, it's easy to get sucked into the Gaga Glamour Galaxy.  However, if you are familiar with the M.A.C. Aids Fund, you are familiar with how important the Viva Glam collections are to not only M.A.C. but the people they help.  These are people who may often feel like they are isolated themselves.  The M.A.C. AIDS Fund was founded in 1994 and has raised over $202 million to date with 13.8 million Viva Glam lipsticks sold. The entire $14.50 price is donated to the cause to help women, men and kids everywhere affected by HIV and AIDS.  I've always known lip color has the power to do good!

If you are planning for your lips to look like Lady Gaga's with just the lipstick and lipglass from the collection, think twice.  The colors will not show up like the photo shown.  After speaking with the M.A.C. artists, it was the consensus that a lipliner was used to perk up the colors.  Unfortunately, after trying the products on several clients, I cannot recommend the Viva Glam Gaga 2 lipstick  (a light, neutral beige) and lipglass (a light, neutral beige with a slight hint of pink)  to everyone.  The lipstick -  a wet, creamy texture - that goes on so thick, that without a light-of-hand application or some blotting, accentuates lip imperfections and ends up looking like light, murky mud.  Darker skin tones would have a harder time with this color.  Even for many with fair skin tones,  the lipstick alone  ends up dull and lifeless on most without the help of the lipglass.

Colors worn:  M.A.C. Viva Glam Gaga 2 Lipstick + Lipglass

Go ahead and venture out to try this.  However, if it doesn't work for you may I suggest looking for new life in Viva Glam's extensive line of easily wearable pinks, mauves and reds. No need to be from Krypton to have super powers.  Just transform yourself and affect the lives of others with color and wear lipstick!

Lip Service: Brown Lips are NOT Natural!

"Crazy for color?"  This is a tagline for one of Bobbi Brown's advertising materials for her new line of Rich Lip Color SPF 12.  What?  This was from a woman who was considered a pioneer of the natural look when she created a collection of 10 BROWN-BASED lipsticks, which debuted at Bergdorf Goodman in New York City in 1991.  Throughout the years, the company that exploded into our consciousness almost entirely on the concept of looking natural seemed to have an identity crisis, introducing more and more color into the mix.

10 out of 12 lipsticks shipped.  From left to right, starting from back row:  Guava, Bare Pink, Bikini Pink, Crimson, Plum Rose, Raspberry, Rose Plum, Soft Coral, Mod Pink, Old Hollywood

I must admit that in general, I have not been a big fan of the Bobbi Brown concept in the past.  For brown-based lips to mean "natural" didn't make sense to me.  The last time I looked, human lips are pink-based with either warm or cool undertones.  Pink, not brown.  Not everyone looks good with warm or brown-based tones.  The natural movement not only encouraged women to walk around with lips that matched their skin (notice I didn't say complement), but it took the makeup movement back years!  More people became afraid to express themselves with color because bland was in-vogue.

Although they have moved on from their original concept, the funny thing is, many women still think of Bobbi Brown as a line to turn to for looking "natural"...never mind that they have extremely vivid blushes and many super shimmery eye shadows and highlighters.  Until now, the lipsticks in the line have been very disappointing in the texture + wearability department...until now.

I first noticed this super color-saturated, smooth lip color on one of my peers and had to ask what she was wearing.  It was a lipstick from the recently-launched Bobbi Brown's Rich Lip Color SPF 12 Collection.  I was so impressed by how the it looked, that I had to seek out the collection for myself.  Available in 12 colors, the lipsticks saturate lips with a very smooth, creamy and moisturizing feel.  The color goes on evenly and I just love the way it makes lips look very smooth without being flat.  It was not quite a matte look, but more like a creamy smoothness without the glossiness.  Despite the color intensity and creamy feel, the formula still manages to be lightweight.  Here's how it looks.

Color worn:  Mod Pink

According to Bobbi herself, " It's a totally modern take on lipstick."   Thank you Bobbi for realizing that COLOR will never be out of style.

Heading West

It’s only fitting that my first post be about the line that caused me to first fall in love with the world of beauty.  It was the Spring of ’89 when I first went to the Estee Lauder counter with my mom who ended up purchasing the Triple Creme and Skin Perfecting Creme.  It was then that I noticed what I still believe is one of the most beautiful photos I have seen….Paulina Porizkova, with her skin glowing, and representing a color story called “Heading West”.  It was the first time I saw how makeup can create a story, a fantasy.  I wanted to be a part of this world and “Heading West” represented my personal story in more ways than one.

Fast Forward to 2011.  The company has re-launched the Pure Color Nail Lacquers.  Those who know me KNOW that as far as nail colors are concerned, I have a huge place in my heart for the Deborah Lippmann and Chanel lines.  However, when I saw these new Lauder colors, I was both excited and surprised to see the Bold colors - that's right, with a capital "B".  This is certainly not your grandmother’s Estee Lauder.  I mean no offense to any grandmother reading this, and you know we love you.  However, it is at times necessary to follow new directions to move forward.

From left to right: 68 Rosa Rosa, 16 Violet Diva, 14 Wild Blue, 13 Mega Fuchsia, 12 Chocolate Crave, 03 Enchanted Garnet, 08 Purple Passion, 15 Wicked Green, 10 Hot Coral, 19 Oyster Cult, 11 Sizzling Taupe, 01 Ultra Violet, 24 Wild Storm, 21 Pure Red, 17 Fuchsia Flame, 69 Frozen Fantasy

As the name "Pure Color" suggests, it's a voyage into a new purity of the green, red, purple and blue among other vivid colors - unlike anything I have seen in prestige lines.   A familiar fixture in high-fashion makeup artistry, Creative Makeup Director Tom Pecheux
valliantly leads us into this new terrain, blossoming with new life of color excitement.

NEW Pure Color Nail Lacquer with True Vision ™ Technology

This new direction includes new technology in formulations.  Since Estee Lauder has one of the largest research and development teams in the biz, it better be something good, right!  According to Estee Lauder, the new Pure Color Nail Lacquer formula now has Exclusive True Vision ™ Technology that allows for true, brilliant color.  The technology wraps color pigments in a crystal-like coating resulting in intense color clarity and vibrancy for a more multidimensional look for the nails.  What does this mean for you?  More color pigment, shine and glossy smooth color and long wear that resists chipping and tipping.

I decided to put them to the test and invited a client to give it a try.  We did notice that the consistency was not as thick as the Deborah Lippmann formula, but it did apply very evenly without streaking.  We also liked its paddle brush that made it easy to apply.  It’s been 5 days and the verdict?  Still looks as good as new.

Colors shown, from left to right:  24 Wild Storm,  03 Enchanted Garnet

Like many I have come across, it’s easy to dismiss a line that has been around since 1946, especially when there are new lines popping up left and right with the lure of flashy images to grab our attention.  However, there’s something to be said about the value of heritage, and the pioneering spirit that paved the way for the new breed.  In today’s consumer-centered cosmetic market of options, those without substance beyond the facade cannot move forward.  The fact that a company (started by the daughter of working class  immigrants to the US)  has moved beyond the west to not only be relevant but a world leader in cosmetics, is really a testament to not only integrity but attainable fantasies.   The beautiful thing is, I rediscovered the “Heading West” photo just very recently, more than 20 years later, and it was exactly the way I remembered it.  A beautiful fantasy …that came true.

Yours Truly
